The friendship ring serves as a way of expressing attachment between close friends
The popularity of the friendship ring is relatively recent, but the idea of showing your regard for another person with the gift of a ring can be traced to back to the earliest days of recorded human history.
It is well-known that in Ancient Egypt the Pharaohs who ruled the land gave a ring to their entrusted minister as a sign of his appointment. Many of you may be familiar with the Biblical account of Pharaoh handing over a ring to Joseph when he appointed him Prime Minister of Egypt.
The source for today’s custom of giving friendship rings is usually traced back to the Ireland of the 1700s and the development of what is called in Gaelic the Claddagh ring.
In its contemporary usage the friendship ring can be described as a token of closeness exchanged between two people. They give each other identical rings to show their attachment, and their intention to preserve these close feelings even when a great distance or time separates them. Looking at the friendship ring serves to remind them of this commitment.
Frequently the exchange of friendship rings is not considered a sign of a romantic relationship although it can lead to one and is subject to interpretation. For example, some women would consider receiving a friendship ring from their boyfriend as just one step away from an engagement but this might just be wishful thinking.
Although a variety of types of ring may be considered friendship rings they have some common features. Generally they are not made of a precious metal and are therefore significantly less expensive than the better known engagement and wedding rings.
Of course, many people choose to suprise their beloved with a friendship ring that is for all essential purposes indistinguishable from a small engagement ring. It all depends on the nature of the relationship.
Stainless steel, silver and titanium are amongst the most common choices of ring material since they are easy to clean and long lasting. Quite often these rings may be engraved with a friendship-related motto or have a heart or some religion symbol that both people find meaningful. Although plenty of rings with these standard symbols are available, you can easily find sellers who are able to customize the design according to your preferences without incurring a significant additional charge.
Typically such rings can be purchased over the Internet for under $100 but you can also easily spend twice this amount or more. A great deal depends on the level of commitment you want to express and your means.
